Chapter Twenty-one
Having brought the conversation with her fans to an end, Hari rejoined Dot and Jez, with Neil at her side.
âAny idea why Shaw wants to talk to Roger?â Neil asked as he replaced the books on the stand.
âNot really.â Afraid that her expression would give her away, convinced it was to do with the conversation sheâd overheard, Hari focused on her novels.
Meanwhile, exchanging an anxious glance with Jez, Dot said, âWe saw Danny go into the hall, and then come out with Roger. He didnât say anything about Sharman while he was in there, did he?â
âHe said nothing beyond that he wanted to talk to Roger.â
Jez nodded. âI canât imagine what Roger might have to say about Sharman.â
âThe police will need to talk to everyone before we can leave the hotel, I suppose.â Feeling a patina of perspiration mottle her neck, Hari fussed over her books. âI wondered; would you be alright if I went up to the Green Room to fetch us some sandwiches? Lunch time came and went and suddenly my appetite has come back.â
âAbsolutely.â Jez rubbed his stomach. âNow youâve mentioned food, I could probably do with something myself. Would you mind bringing a selection down?â
âNo problem. Neil, Dot, do you want some too?â
As Dot gave a thumbs up, Neil said, âIâm okay, thanks. Iâll head back to my room for a bit. I brought supplies from home.â
Hari was about to follow Neil from the trading zone when a couple of the guests whoâd been at her informal chat arrived, requesting signatures on books theyâd already purchased. âIâll just help these folk, then Iâll grab us some food.â
Feeling bad for privately cursing the fans whoâd held up her departure, Hari hoped that her hunch that Danny would take Roger to the Green Room to talk to him was correct.
Hurrying up the back stairs, Hari didnât allow herself to contemplate whether she was following Danny and Roger because she wanted to find out what Roger would say about the conversation heâd previously denied having, or if she just wanted to see Danny again.
Donât be ridiculous.
Slowing her pace as she reached the Green Room, Hari saw no one in the corridor ahead, nor could she hear any conversation coming from within.
She hadnât been sure what she intended to do â listen at the door, perhaps. Now there was nothing obvious to overhear, she took a deep breath and went inside and headed to an array of clingfilm-wrapped sandwiches.
âHi, Harriet.â
Her hand flung to her chest as she leapt in surprise. âOh my God, Lee! You scared the life out of me.â
âSorry.â He gave a sad shrug. âSeems Iâm destined to upset you whenever we meet.â
âNot at all. I guess weâre all a bit jumpy right now.â
Lee patted the chair next to him. âFancy a chat?â
âSure.â Surprised by the invitation, Hari sat down. âAre you alright? Hope you donât mind my saying, but youâre looking a bitââ
âFloored?â
âWell, yes, now you mention it.â Hari paused. âSharman?â
âI liked her. We got on. She was soâ¦â
âJez described her as a force of nature.
