Chapter Twenty-one

Having brought the conversation with her fans to an end, Hari rejoined Dot and Jez, with Neil at her side.

‘Any idea why Shaw wants to talk to Roger?’ Neil asked as he replaced the books on the stand.

‘Not really.’ Afraid that her expression would give her away, convinced it was to do with the conversation she’d overheard, Hari focused on her novels.

Meanwhile, exchanging an anxious glance with Jez, Dot said, ‘We saw Danny go into the hall, and then come out with Roger. He didn’t say anything about Sharman while he was in there, did he?’

‘He said nothing beyond that he wanted to talk to Roger.’

Jez nodded. ‘I can’t imagine what Roger might have to say about Sharman.’

‘The police will need to talk to everyone before we can leave the hotel, I suppose.’ Feeling a patina of perspiration mottle her neck, Hari fussed over her books. ‘I wondered; would you be alright if I went up to the Green Room to fetch us some sandwiches? Lunch time came and went and suddenly my appetite has come back.’

‘Absolutely.’ Jez rubbed his stomach. ‘Now you’ve mentioned food, I could probably do with something myself. Would you mind bringing a selection down?’

‘No problem. Neil, Dot, do you want some too?’

As Dot gave a thumbs up, Neil said, ‘I’m okay, thanks. I’ll head back to my room for a bit. I brought supplies from home.’

Hari was about to follow Neil from the trading zone when a couple of the guests who’d been at her informal chat arrived, requesting signatures on books they’d already purchased. ‘I’ll just help these folk, then I’ll grab us some food.’

Feeling bad for privately cursing the fans who’d held up her departure, Hari hoped that her hunch that Danny would take Roger to the Green Room to talk to him was correct.

Hurrying up the back stairs, Hari didn’t allow herself to contemplate whether she was following Danny and Roger because she wanted to find out what Roger would say about the conversation he’d previously denied having, or if she just wanted to see Danny again.

Don’t be ridiculous.

Slowing her pace as she reached the Green Room, Hari saw no one in the corridor ahead, nor could she hear any conversation coming from within.

She hadn’t been sure what she intended to do – listen at the door, perhaps. Now there was nothing obvious to overhear, she took a deep breath and went inside and headed to an array of clingfilm-wrapped sandwiches.

‘Hi, Harriet.’

Her hand flung to her chest as she leapt in surprise. ‘Oh my God, Lee! You scared the life out of me.’

‘Sorry.’ He gave a sad shrug. ‘Seems I’m destined to upset you whenever we meet.’

‘Not at all. I guess we’re all a bit jumpy right now.’

Lee patted the chair next to him. ‘Fancy a chat?’

‘Sure.’ Surprised by the invitation, Hari sat down. ‘Are you alright? Hope you don’t mind my saying, but you’re looking a bit—’

‘Floored?’

‘Well, yes, now you mention it.’ Hari paused. ‘Sharman?’

‘I liked her. We got on. She was so…’

‘Jez described her as a force of nature.
